At Manappuram Finance, we believe in a simple dictum: what is good for the community is good for business. This guiding philosophy has inspired us to enhance our social investments and be responsible to the community around us. That was how the Manappuram Foundation was set up in 2009, with the objective of driving the company’s CSR vision. Today, the Manappuram Foundation contributes to various social initiatives. It has emerged as a leading charitable organisation in the area that extends generous financial support to deserving causes and to needy individuals.

Insuring health

The Foundation’s landmark initiative was the “Janaraksha - Manappuram Free Health Insurance Scheme” providing free health insurance to about 20,000 BPL families in seven identified Panchayats around Valapad in the coastal belt of Thrissur District. The cost of the insurance premium is fully borne by the Foundation. Since the premium amounts to about Rs. 500 per family, the total expense on this account alone exceeds Rs. 1 crore. Beneficiaries are now eligible for free treatment for an amount of up to Rs. 60,000 per year at various hospitals in the district.

Moreover, to ensure that the insured are able to make full use of the facility, the Foundation has set up a fully equipped office at the Group’s Corporate Headquarters at Valapad, manned by trained social workers and psychiatric social workers who provide guidance and support to beneficiaries in matters like filing of reimbursement claims and the like. Help-desks serving as accessible contact points have been set up in all the seven Panchayats covered under the project. The scheme is widely hailed as a model CSR initiative, relevant to the needs of the community, which is also noteworthy for its effective implementation.

Education first

The Foundation has also launched the Manappuram Academy at Triprayar (Thrissur District) to impart free coaching for professional courses. It is meant for talented students from economically weaker backgrounds. The Academy offers coaching for CA, CS and ICWA courses.

The Foundation also has an ongoing programme to improve infrastructure in local schools, which focuses on construction of new toilets and repairs/ renovation of buildings. It has also taken up “English for self-confidence” and “Empowering Generation Next through Education” projects aimed at local school and college students. The programme offers free coaching in English to improve self-confidence and bring them on par with urban children. Also, scholarships are offered to deserving school and college students from economically weaker backgrounds.

Care for the aged

The Manappuram Foundation has partnered with Thalikulam Vikas Trust to set up its first Adult Day Centre (Pakalveedu) at Thalikulam (Thrissur District). This initiative, meant for senior citizens, provides them with avenues to spend their time productively by expanding their knowledge, developing their creativity and so on. The day centre provides recreational facilities, along with medical care and a healthy diet prescribed by a nutritionist free of cost.

Partners in upbringing

The Foundation is actively associated with Alpha Pain and Palliative Care Clinic at Edamuttom (Thrissur District) to enable the Clinic to offer free or low cost treatment to the needy. Every month, the Foundation contributes Rs. 1 lakh to this charitable organisation that has helped bring smiles to the needy. The Foundation also makes significant donations to Santhi Medical Information Centre at Guruvayur, a prominent charitable organisation devoted to helping needy patients with free dialysis. The active CSR profile has earned much goodwill for a company that otherwise would have been regarded as just another personal finance company. Manappuram Finance Ltd. is now considered a model corporate house in Kerala.
